Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two episodes as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. Perry did not decide to pursue acting as a career after reaching adulthood, as her parents were concerned about the adverse consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry, who was too timid to perform in the high school, started to act in theater classes at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new friends. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness brought Perry her back home California, where theater jobs were readily available. She performed on Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was staged at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared in 9 episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her on the ABC show Scandal. That same year her character was cast a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's role. The role was given to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she is a relative with the role.
